Being a college student comes with many perks — discounts on everything from food to music, technology, art and transportation. We at the Daily Cal have compiled a list of these student perks and discounts for you. Some of them are specific to UC Berkeley students and others are for college students in general. Either way, be sure to make the most out of these services during your time as a college student before it’s too late!

Technology and education

As a student, you are given access to numerous software and platforms to enhance your learning. This academic year, you have free access to Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite along with a free Box subscription. Students also get a free subscription to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and LinkedIn Learning, as well as 50% off an annual subscription to The Economist. In addition, technology is more accessible with Apple’s education pricing and Samsung’s Student Discount Program. On campus, free printing is available at the Open Computing Facility, and your Berkeley email address provides you with free access to academic journals through the UC Berkeley Library’s A-Z Databases list.

Entertainment

In case you find time between studying for exams, joining student organizations and trying to maintain a social life, you can find plenty of student discounts for entertainment. In the realm of TV, students receive free streaming on Kanopy and can purchase discounted student plans for Hulu. If you’re also interested in music, you can purchase a Spotify Premium student plan that comes with Hulu and SHOWTIME subscriptions. For music streaming alone, Apple Music also offers student memberships.

Transportation

Your student Clipper card will get you onto all AC Transit buses that will take you nearly anywhere in Berkeley and the greater East Bay. If you prefer driving but don’t own a car, use Zipcar — you get almost 80% off the annual plan — or Enterprise Car Rental to rent a car for any length of time between a few hours to several days. For a change of pace, try taking the Amtrak train, as students receive 15% off.

Arts and recreation

Did you know that UC Berkeley students get free entry to the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the Hearst Museum of Anthropology, the Lawrence Hall of Science, the UC Botanical Garden and the Berkeley Rose Garden? Not only that, but students receive a 50% discount for all Cal Performances events along with a 10% discount on art classes at the Berkeley Art Studio. If you’d like some exercise, check out the free equipment and group exercise available at the Recreational Sports Facility on campus or venture a bit further to enjoy free kayaking and paddleboarding at the Berkeley Marina. Regarding music and film, various student discounts are available at Rasputin’s and Amoeba Music, as well as at AMC theaters and Landmark Shattuck Cinemas.

Food

Many restaurants and dessert shops around campus offer student discounts. Some include Humphry Slocombe, Bobby G’s Pizzeria and Cinnaholic. Every fifth coffee at Peet’s is free for UC Berkeley students, and Krispy Kreme will give you a free donut if you get an A in class. Additionally, many students and restaurants use Snackpass, an app that enables you to find daily deals as well as collect and send stamps and gifts to friends.

Miscellaneous

Students can find more perks at both on- and off-campus facilities. For example, the University Health Services offers free counseling while several campus offices and groups offer free legal services. Students get free Amazon Prime for six months then 50% off after, along with discounts at various apparel brands including Madewell, Toms and many more on UNiDAYS, such as Adidas, Hollister, Kate Spade and H&M.

While this list may update over time, wherever you go, it never hurts to ask if they offer a student discount — especially at businesses and eateries around campus. Aside from these discounts, however, one of the biggest perks you receive as a UC Berkeley student is the simple fact that you are a UC Berkeley student! Your student email alone holds the power to be recognized by individuals, communities and employers from all around the world. Hold your head high, enjoy your time at UC Berkeley and take full advantage of being a Golden Bear!
