What your mode of communication says about your relationships

The one thing everyone knows about college students is that they’re always busy. Whether they’re catching up on classes or running to and from club meetings, the average college student often finds it difficult to catch up with their friends and family in person, which leaves it up to one of the most useful inventions of the 21st century: the text message. However, with communication opportunities from iMessage to Discord, what we choose as our go-to communication style says a lot about who we are and how we hold our relationships. So, with absolutely no knowledge about the psychology behind communication methods, I have decided to create a list talking about that very thing.

iMessage

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of people who use iMessage or a generic texting application is reliability. People who use iMessage use it because you get alerted right away, and it is easy to use. When it comes to relationships, these kinds of people are stable and reliable. When it comes to a rough day or a family emergency, iMessage people are the ones you text first because they’re always there to lend an ear and support. We appreciate you, iMessage people.

Instagram direct message

Although you can rely on people who use Instagram DM as their mode of communication, Instagram DM users are the best for a good laugh or pointless (yet memorable) conversation. Whether this is because most of the conversation revolves around sending memes or commenting on stories, Instagram DM people are fun and keep their relationships that way, too. If you ever are looking for someone to make you laugh, try reaching out to that Instagram friend (we all have one).

Snapchat

Snapchat people are difficult to place because using Snapchat as your main source of communication could mean very contradicting things. But for the sake of this article, we can stick with the positives. Snapchat users hold spontaneous and intimate relationships. With conversations that range heavily between 3 a.m. childhood trauma talks, to messages back and forth about things they found at Target, relationships to Snapchat people are intimate. These people often grow close to you and hold a special place in your heart without you knowing. With the emotional range of a Spotify playlist, the relationships of Snapchat people are good for the soul.

Discord

Another difficult communication style to place, Discord people strike me as the busiest people of them all. These users hold their relationships very close to their hearts but often don’t have the time throughout the day to connect with their friends. They reserve their nights or their study breaks to reach out on Discord, an application where you can do anything from call to text, in order to show they really care. Discord people hold the kind of relationships that are immune to time and will keep you up at night sharing stories.

Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger people hold relationships that are the perfect mix between business and fun. Although they may send you informational reels or “breaking” news, these informational messages are often mixed in with fun recipes or funny home videos, all of which are sent with love and adoration. Facebook Messenger people are going to motivate you to do better and support you on the way.

Although you should not take any of these generalizations to heart, I hope you enjoyed reading about your relationships based on your mode of communication. Happy texting!
