Everyone comes into your life for a reason; there’s something you can learn from everyone. But there are some things that you can learn from the people in your life that are unique to you. They’re not in self-help books, movies or podcasts. No, the things you learn from these people cannot be replicated in any other place.

As the year comes to an end, I want to take the time to reflect by writing down some pieces of advice that I had been given by my friends and family. Here are 10 things that some of those people in my life have taught me this year.

My grandmother

You taught me that you’re never given something you can’t handle. I learned about strength and hope from you. You told me to keep going, and as painful as that sometimes is, you showed me that you can dance and sing along the way.

My mom

You’ve taught me to always love deeply despite the hurt that I may have experienced. I learned to not let my past define my future, to love each person in my life to the best of my ability and to never be afraid of love.

My dad

You taught me what mindfulness and manifestation were at 7-years-old and continuously show me the power of it in your own life. You showed me that fear is the enemy, and you were able to change the voice in my head to one that pushes me and believes in me.

My brother

When it felt like my world was crashing down, you’d come into my room and show me your latest obsession. This saved me. You’d kindly laugh at me for freaking out and gently remind me to not take myself so seriously. When did you become so wise? It was just yesterday that you were using your hair as a napkin.

My Sofia

You constantly inspire me to challenge everything, to stay curious and to not pretend to be someone I’m not. Life at school would simply be insufferable without you. You showed me how to stay grounded and genuine.

My Lauren

You’ve taught me how to find strength in our culture and our roots. You showed me what loyalty was, and you’ve helped me learn how to put myself first. You also showed me the power of a good outfit.

My Mehul

You took care of me when I couldn’t take care of myself. You’ve shown me how to find joy in the present and remind me that I am never taking up too much space. You made me want to read a book.

My Theo

You taught me to surround myself with people who make me feel loved. You showed me that I deserve more than I think I do and that sometimes sacrificing some school work to have fun is the best thing you can do for yourself once in a while.

My Max

You taught me to live life with more spontaneity and to trust in the things that felt right. You showed me the power of vulnerability and that the best things come when you least expect them.

My roommates

You’ve taught me how to embrace my body and style wholeheartedly. You’ve shown me the power of community and that there is always time to prioritize mental health.

Of course, there is so much more advice and so many more people who I could have included, but here were just a few. To all of the wonderful people in my life — although some of them may never read this — I love you dearly, and I am so grateful to have gotten the privilege to know you and have you in my life. You will stay with me, forever.

I can’t remember the last time I cried. Outside of watching movies or reading books, I probably only cry once or twice a year.
