Cal tight end Jake Tonges enters transfer portal

On Dec. 9, former walk-on tight end turned scholarship starting tight end Jake Tonges entered the transfer portal, looking to find a new home away from Berkeley in 2022.

Tonges totaled 47 receptions for 620 yards and four touchdowns at Cal over his career. Proclaimed as the “best tight end in the Pac-12” by fellow tight end Collin Moore, Tonges’ seniority and presence in the locker room and on the field may be missed by Cal in the season to come.

The Bears will look to new faces in the tight end room, as they have lost Moore, Reinwald and now Tonges in the last few days. True freshmen Keleki Latu and former four-star Jermaine Terry II figure to be important parts of the offense going forward, as the two have been generating buzz among the Cal community over the summer and 2021 season. Redshirt sophomore Elijah Mojarro will likely slide into formation when the Bears retreat to one of their favorite looks: “13” personnel (one running back and three tight ends).
