Beginning Sunday, AC Transit riders will no longer be required to wear face masks.

AC Transit announced the decision to lift the mandate Friday in response to a “consistent decline” in COVID-19 cases since July 2022.

However, in a news release, AC Transit noted that requirements are subject to change if COVID-19 cases spike in the Bay Area or if mask mandates are reinstated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California Department of Public Health, Transportation Security Administration or health officers from Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

AC Transit will continue to supply complimentary personal protective equipment dispensers at the front of each bus for customers who wish to continue wearing face maks.
