Ever since my freshman year, I’ve been on the hunt to find the best Mexican food. Moving from a town filled with authentic restaurants at every corner, coming to Berkeley felt like I’d been stripped of my favorite foods. Over the past two years, however, I’ve hunted down and created a list of my go-to Mexican food spots within walking distance. If you, like me, are in the search of the best places for some great food, this is the perfect list for you.

El Talpense/Celia’s

Starting off, my top go-to spot is El Talpense, formerly known as Celia’s. This spot has some of the best traditional meals in the area. With an extremely extensive menu featuring delicious meals, desserts and drinks, you are sure to find something you’ll love. My favorites are either the ceviche with tostadas or enchiladas. I also love asking for extra spicy salsa to munch on with my chips. On top of the amazing food, the ambiance and kind staff in this restaurant can’t be beat. If you want an authentic Mexican dinner with tons of flavor then you can’t go wrong here.

Tacos Sinaloa

When I need a quick meal on the go, Tacos Sinaloa is my favorite location. They offer a wide range of tacos, burritos and aguas frescas at very reasonable prices. As a pescatarian, I usually order a fish burrito or shrimp taco. I usually pair these meals with perfectly cooked entrees with a creamy horchata. When you’re looking to grab something on the way home this option will be ready for pickup before you know it!

Tacos and Co.

Another spot that’s great for on the go Mexican food is Tacos and Co. With their unique menu you can find yourself picking something new every time. My personal favorite are the nopal tacos that are deliciously seasoned and prepared. If you’re looking to mix it up, try out their burrito bowls or al pastor tacos! Or, grab some of their lengua for a truly authentic meal. No matter your taste buds, they’re guaranteed to have something for you. An added bonus to their great meals is their convenient location perfect for a quick fix.

Comal

A slightly fancier option in the downtown area is Comal. This sit down restaurant has great food with a slightly more elegant setting. The perfect spot for a date night or girls’ night out. With their menu filled with all the classics — as well as a wide range of beverages — you can’t go wrong. The line can get busy, so if you plan on coming at peak hours make sure to set a reservation ahead of time.

While finding Mexican food was a challenge, having a list of go-to locations is a great way to get the best food in town. Hopefully this list inspires your food-hunting endeavors!
