Bargaining teams from UAW Local 5810, the union local representing postdoctoral scholars and academic researchers at the University of California, reached a tentative contract agreement with the university Monday night.
The proposals agreed to by both bargaining units include compensation to address cost of living, increase in paid parental and family leave, disability protections, longer initial appointments, protections against abusive conduct and bullying, guaranteed time for immigration appointments, e-bike discounts and a commitment to free transit passes in the near future.
Specific proposals for postdoctoral scholars also include childcare subsidies, while academic researchers are eligible for principal investigator status and have an improved union security article to enforce the contract, should it be ratified.
“These victories would not have happened without the solidarity of all 48,000 Academic Workers, especially the 36,000 Academic Student Employees and Student Researchers,” a UC-UAW bargaining update sent early Tuesday morning reads.
Despite the tentative agreement, academic researchers and postdoctoral scholars are still on strike “in sympathy” with student researchers and academic student employees, who remain at the bargaining table, until the membership ratifies the agreements.
Members of each UAW 5810 bargaining team will vote on the ratification of their respective contract “in the coming days,” according to the update. The union is additionally planning town halls to answer questions, with dates to be announced soon.
