This weekend, Cal traveled to UC Davis for the Aggie Invite. The No. 4 Bears entered as the team to beat, as they faced unranked California Baptist and No. 17 Davis in the one-day tournament.

The Cal women’s water polo team finished with a pair of comprehensive victories, first defeating California Baptist 19-5 in the morning before beating the hosts 15-5 shortly after.

In both games, two Cal players registered hat tricks. Freshman Abbi Magee and redshirt freshman Janna Tauscher were especially effective offensively, each recording five goals over the two games.

The first contest against California Baptist proved to be the highest-scoring game of Cal’s season with the Bears putting away 19 goals — 11 coming from freshmen. Magee started off strong early in the game with a penalty shot and a buzzer-beater goal in the final minutes of the first quarter, giving Cal a 4-1 lead.

Fellow freshman Millie Quin added an additional two goals for the Bears in the second period to give Cal a 10-2 lead at halftime.

With the game secured, head coach Coralie Simmons substituted out senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams for the second half. After stopping a penalty shot in the third-straight game this season in the first quarter, she tallied up eight more saves in the second to bring her total to 12.

Williams noted how the team is doing a good job of working together.

“I think we always work well together when we are playing together. So when we notice little holes in maybe someone is not talking or we are not on it together, helping each other out, that is where we really struggle,” Williams said. “That is something that we always want to keep in mind because we are such a strong team when we play together and with each other.”

The story continued in the second half as the Bears ran up the score to claim their largest win of the year. Junior Reagan Whitney scored on two power plays. Magee and Quin both scored again in the fourth to give them season highs of four goals and three goals, respectively. Tauscher, Whitney, Helena Batey and Lindsey Harris all finished the game with two goals.

After a quick recess, the Bears picked up where they left off and conquered the host team, UC Davis, thanks to a truly unstoppable defensive effort. Tauscher and senior Shea Salvino both notched their second hat tricks of the season in the Bears’ 15-5 win.

Tauscher made a big splash in the opening period as she scored Cal’s first two goals. The Aggies then equalized at 2-2 in the final minute of the first quarter, but junior Ruby Swadling converted a six-on-five power play to restore Cal’s advantage for good. The Bears went on to dominate both the second and third quarters of the game with goals from five different players.

Ending the weekend with a decisive defensive performance, the Bears secured another two wins for the regular competition season.

Cal now has a week off before heading to Irvine for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. This will be the final tournament before the Bears start conference play.
