The Berkeley Fire Department, or BFD, plans to launch a comprehensive neighborhood program to reduce wildfire risks later this March.

Called FireSafe Berkeley, the program will enlist ambassadors to educate neighbors, spread word about the program at city events and monitor all homes in the Berkeley Hills. 8,000 properties will be covered by the program, according to marketing lead Douglas Hull.

The program, which was formerly known as the Hillside Fire Safety Group, will be launched as a response to higher wildfire risks in the summer this year as compared to a hundred years ago and in remembrance of over 600 properties destroyed in the 1923 Berkeley wildfires, their website reads.
