Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky announced Thursday that Indigenous Peoples’ Day is now a recognized holiday at the law school.
The announcement directly results from campaigning by the Native American Law Students Association at Berkeley Law, or NALSA, a post on its Instagram account reads. The holiday, which falls annually on the second Monday of October, was first instituted in Berkeley in 1992 as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day.
“Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a school holiday will enable Native American law students to spend the day engaging with the Bay Area Indigenous community events without fear of how that might impact their school obligations,” the NALSA Instagram post reads.
