“Cal Dining” is now “Berkeley Dining,” as part of a rebranding effort by UC Berkeley following the efforts of a task force formed last year to review naming practices.

Campus Recreational Sports, or “Rec Sports,” also has a new name: Recreation and Wellness, or “RecWell.”

“It’s modern and a more authentic reflection of who we are and what we do,” said campus spokesperson Adam Ratliff regarding the Berkeley Dining renaming in an email. “All of the new elements work together to reflect our passion and commitment to serving students and our community.”

Though an unrelated project, Ratliff noted that the name changes are in alignment with recommendations from the Berkeley/Cal Identity Task Force.

In 2022, the task force was formed to review how a dual-identity campus should ideally move forward in their naming practices.

The new names, however, are a product of the Division of Student Affairs, which surveyed students and campus partners to gather feedback on what were formerly Cal Dining and Rec Sports.

“The name (Berkeley Dining) provides clarity and consistency across campus as well as externally,” Ratliff said in the email.

In addition, according to Ratliff, the name “Berkeley Dining” helps connect the campus dining halls more strongly to the UC Berkeley brand.

Similarly, “Recreation and Wellness” highlights some of the other services available to students in RecWell, Ratliff noted. As listed on the RecWell website, these services include nutrition, personal training and workshops.

“The new identity showcases that RecWell continues to offer the breadth and depth of services and resources that have long supported students, and promoted physical and mental wellness for the entire campus community,” Ratliff wrote in the email. “Students will see the new names and branding in their respective spaces, rolling out this Fall.”

Berkeley Dining and Berkeley RecWell have updated their websites, but Ratliff noted that more noticeable changes such as signage and materials may take some time to appear.
