Everyone knows that the best way to start your day is with a cup of coffee. And every morning, I do.

My favorite part about being a student barista is being able to do the things I love: make good coffee and learn about people. While the smell of brewed coffee fills the air and the sound of the coffee machines and blenders echo throughout the room, I listen to customers’ stories about where they’re from, what’s on their minds and how their day is so far. The most satisfying part of my job is knowing that I was able to help someone start their day off right.

Since I work mornings, I leave the rest of my day to complete school and other work. When my shift ends, I head to class or the library to hit the books.

Working as a student barista means starting most mornings off with an oat milk latte and a smile. It also means navigating balancing school work and other extracurricular activities. Here is a series of photos of the cafe I work at and what it’s like to be a student barista.
