For the upcoming ASUC election cycle, four official parties are running candidates: Defend Affirmative Action Party/Fighting for Immigrant Rights and Equality, or DAAP/FIRE, Student Action, People’s Party and REBUILD.

The ASUC Senate met virtually Wednesday to discuss accommodations campus will be taking moving forward in response to COVID-19, the new coronavirus.

As a daughter of Mexican immigrants, campus sophomore Sahvannah Rodriguez hopes to be a source of strength for the Latinx community on campus as the Latinx community-endorsed ASUC Senate candidate.

On March 5, Nicole Anyanwu and Derek Imai, who are both current ASUC senators, announced their candidacies for next academic year’s Academic Affairs Vice President and External Affairs Vice President, respectively.

The ASUC Elections Council met Feb. 28 to conduct a countback tabulation in order to fill former ASUC senator Milton Zerman’s seat. After the tabulator ran, Emily Fregoso, who ran with the CalSERVE party, was officially announced the newest ASUC senator.

The ASUC Senate met Feb. 26 to discuss Cal Dining initiatives as well as updates on the Campus Master Plan, which outlines future physical changes to campus.

UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ released two letters Feb. 18 responding to an ASUC bill that would have condemned a cubicle display by Bears for Palestine in Eshleman Hall that included photos of controversial Palestinian activists — some of whom had allegedly been involved in acts of terrorism.

The ASUC University and External Affairs Committee voted against SR 19/20-032, Senator Milton Zerman’s bill that would condemn Bears for Palestine for its cubicle display in Eshleman Hall. Many members of the public attended to comment on the bill, most of whom stood in solidarity with BFP.

Following Monday’s Bears for Palestine protest, tensions were high during the third ASUC Senate meeting of the semester Wednesday. Public comment speakers were present at the meeting, with most speakers standing in solidarity with BFP and condemning the ASUC’s handling of the situation.
