The exposure to such a vast amount of creative work has played a really crucial part in this Quest to Understand Myself™.

That whole thing is ironic because “the way (Basquiat’s work) spoke out against social injustice” was one of the reasons the company said it was so eager to collaborate with the Basquiat estate.

But I did realize that my freshman year of college has marked a start of a significant period in my life — one in which I’ve begun to hear the music that plays behind my dearest memories.

What the film forgets is that audiences don’t want to see Al Gore as a politician — they want to see Gore as a humanitarian.

It wasn’t love at first sight or outlandish romantic gestures. It was this slow percolation of a honey-scented breath, it was the color of red lipstick stains on someone’s neck, it was everywhere.

When I see her now, I feel as though I’m looking at an imposter. This woman took the place of the mom that I had — the one I felt entitled to.

I begrudgingly drank a cup of coffee as I wondered what else to say. I didn’t want to hear about how he couldn’t find the glaring problems in this love story.

I wanted to be that carefree. I wanted to be creative and funny and like my brother had been, so I channeled that into my art as a kid.

Caught in the awe of the day’s events, I couldn’t help but worry that the pieces of this day — the pastel mountains, the van of childhood friends — would be the happiest ones of my life.

All you can really do is sit in the darkness of her room, comb through her hair with your hands and hope that the Frida Kahlo cross on her wall that’s dangling from a thumbtack doesn’t come crashing down.
