Once I found out that Cleary had passed away, I had to go back and learn more about her. I owed it to her since she was a big part of my childhood.

Now this is a time of year that I associate with hitting essay word counts, dreading final papers and exams and, of course, rummaging through all my notes so that I can be as prepared as possible for finals.However, now more than ever, it is so very vital that we as Bears try to embrace the Christmas spirit.

I know for me, at least, that consumption is no longer just something I associate with food and sustainability, but rather the concept of taking something in; specifically, it’s doing so in a way that is harmful and excessive to myself.

All I had to do was choose a couple of traits of myself that I had noticed and pick them apart. Later, though, the act of self-reflection became something that I would run away from. Or at least it used to be.

I lose a lot of things Keys, pencils, books, rings. But there is one thing — Specifically a pair — That I can never seem to find And it’s got me splitting hairs!

I grew up hating my hair, wishing it was straighter and hoping to one day grow up and magically have the hair I wanted.

Everything from what seemed to be the floor to the limitless void above him was unpigmented and desolate.

A new addition to UC Berkeley’s English department, associate professor Fiona McFarlane is the author of a novel, “The Night Guest,” and a collection of short stories, “The High Places.”
