Tale of the Tape: Breaking down Cal’s offensive line failures against Washington

Not only did the Cal football team fail to score more than seven points against Washington on Saturday, it was also unable to generate explosive plays. The Bears’ longest play was 25 yards, a Jared Goff to Maurice Harris connection that took place in the first quarter. Besides that completion to Harris, Cal’s offense, for the first time this season, featured a dink-and-dunk approach. Goff, whose 9.4 yards per passing attempt ranks ninth in the nation, averaged just six yards per completion against the Huskies. After the game, head coach Sonny Dykes attributed his team’s failure to stretch the field…

Out of the Woods: After growing up in East Oakland, Kevin Parker uses his experiences to mentor Cal athletes

Bang. A boy on the streets knows he has to keep moving. He’s got to keep his head down as he makes his way along the concrete streets and past the dark buildings as he walks to school. The sound is nothing new. Only 12 years old, and he’s become numb. Bang. Just an elementary-school kid in jeans a size too big and his favorite ratted sweatshirt, he already knows what it’s like to experience loss. He knows what it’s like to have to go to funerals — he’s already had to say goodbye to one of his teammates on…

UCLA comes to Memorial Stadium Saturday to take on Cal football

Despite already winning four games, including two Pac-12 contests, the Cal football team still has one sizeable knock against its 4-2 record: It has yet to beat a good team. The Bears’ three FBS wins have come against teams with a combined 7-12 record. On Saturday, Cal will have a chance at flipping that script when UCLA (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) pays a visit to Memorial Stadium. While the Bruins are no longer ranked — they dropped out of the top 25 this week — they’re a team many considered at the onset of the season to be a legitimate contender…

Still room for optimism

It was all good just a week ago. Jared Goff was dealing. Daniel Lasco became a big-play threat, adding a dynamic running game to the Bear Raid. Trevor Davis is a fast person. And the defense, although it gave up big numbers, had reasons to be optimistic. Griffin Piatt had three picks and led the team in tackles, and Brennan Scarlett has proven to be a tough cover one-on-one for opposing offensive tackles. Then, Shaq Thompson happened. Taking the ball 100 yards from Cal’s end zone to Washington’s, Thompson and the rest of the Huskies slapped the Bears back into…

Revisiting Joe Roth’s legacy

In every photo I’ve seen, Joe Roth wears this whimsical, genuine smile on his face. It’s the kind of broad, generous grin few people can wear naturally. I’m a 21-year-old college student who was born 15 years after Roth died. I can’t pretend to have known him, but in every description, every account I’ve heard, he’s that quiet, humble leader everyone around him looked up to. He’s the quiet leader everyone around him wanted to emulate. He’s the kind of person who could wear that smile. It’s that personality — that relentless optimism — that the documentary film “Don’t Quit:…
