It’s asking a lot — as a Daily Californian journalist who holds great pride in attending UC Berkeley — to remain unbiased in my reporting on Cal athletics. Why do I have to be “professional” and “impartial” when I am writing about the questionable holding penalties in the Cal-Auburn game?

A late Auburn score spoiled the night for Cal as the Bears failed to capitalize on several opportunities.

“He’s one of our best players, he’s team captain voted on by everybody — my heart breaks for him,” said Cal head coach Justin Wilcox. “It means a lot to him, and it’s unfortunate.”

Cal’s defense kept them in the game until the very end. Costly mistakes on offense and special teams will need to be evaluated in the lead up to next week.

If there is one storied truth about Cal football — a tale as old as time, if you will — it is this: hope remains abundant among true fans despite having no real precedent to do so.
