The win encompassed the spirit of college football, but the quarterback who donned No. 12 on the front of his bright blue and gold jersey encompassed the spirit of what it means to be a Cal Bear.

“Every game is important,” McIlwain said. “The way you attack every game and the way you attack every day should be exactly the same. We’re really focused on ourselves and continuing to get better and continuing to fix the things, the problems, that we have.”

Let’s be honest — playing it safe in any facet of life isn’t fun. The same goes for Wilcox’s play-calling. I personally love the bold and aggressive calls — the only problem is that I don’t think he’s got a disciplined-enough team to pull off some of the calls. That being said, they’ve got the potential to get there.

With a trio of quarterbacks ready at a moment’s notice and a defensive lineup that continues to impress, Cal’s outlook coincides with the team’s ranking — looking upward. Only time will tell if this is the year for Chase Garbers and Cal football.

When he isn’t on a football field lined up at wide receiver — formerly at the University of Michigan and now as a graduate transfer for Cal — Ways is using his life experiences to influence others. From large seminar settings to the locker room and everything in between.

The sequence was not merely a well-executed one-off — it also provided fuel to Cal’s offensive fire. Following that touchdown pass, Garbers would throw two more into the endzone, one more to Duncan and one to tight end Jake Ashton.

With that sort of production, the Bears will need to put points on the scoreboard as well and not be content hanging back and relying on their defense, which has been the case in the first three weeks.

On any given Saturday, fans will see a different combination of black, white, silver and about 20 different shades of green, yellow and orange adorning the Ducks’ uniforms.
