A few modern shows, in anticipation of new story trends and modes of narrative, are overturning many established conventions in these animated serials — for better and for worse. Two themes from the lab are currently the most well-received: a minimalism in choice of details, and an emphasis on narratives of orphanhood.

When I first got my acceptance letter from UC Berkeley, digital confetti streaming across my screen, my friend called me crazy for wanting to go there.

Though the protagonists of Cassius (Lakeith Stanfield) and girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson) are both played by Black actors, they at times employ the “white voice” of dubbed-over, white, occasionally British actors.

Set on the corner of Telegraph and Durant avenues, his art sprawls all over the pavement, the colors vibrant against the otherwise bleak, gray sidewalk. Mondays through Fridays, he can be found displaying his pieces while shamelessly dancing to the music blasting from his van, greeting students with his own freestyle rhymes.

Though not a formally trained artist by trade, Olivier has been collecting trash on the shores of the East Bay — beaches extending from the Bay Bridge to the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge — on his walks with his dogs and constructing these huge, multimaterial sculptures for years.

While there is no single cure-all strategy for addressing mental health, it’s clear that by considering and adapting to these diverse conceptions and experiences, the co-ops are taking important and necessary steps toward promoting mental wellness within their community.

Does it matter that almost 70 years ago this same route was followed by the beatniks? I think the answer lies in how busy City Lights is and how the Beat Museum manages to survive against all odds...

Despite the rising influence of corporate businesses, Berkeley remains a vibrant place of rich culture and history — a place with character encapsulated by the still-flourishing independent bookstore scene.

Instead of performing only in concert halls, which are typically reserved for more wealthy audiences who can pay a hefty entrance fee, Celli members play in small groups around the Berkeley community.
