It seems as though Cal women’s tennis’ biggest opponent this semester has been the rain. Slated to play San Diego State on Friday, a big question mark hovers over the Bears’ Hellman Tennis Complex with more rain predicted to end the week.

Following a weekend of rainouts, Cal returned to the court in Miami, facing off against highly ranked Miami and NC State. Despite valiant efforts, both matches ended in losses for the Bears, dropping their record to 2-3.

Cal women’s tennis will face off against no. 16 Miami and no. 10 NC State from Feb 11-12. Hoping to redeem themselves after their loss against USD in late January, Cal seeks singles and doubles success this weekend.

As Shelton was battling it out in Melbourne, college teams across the country, including No. 11 Cal, participated in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, vying for a spot at the Indoor Nationals in Seattle. While the Bears beat Princeton 4-1 on Friday, San Diego got the better of Cal on Saturday, also with a 4-1 win.

The No. 11 Bears play Princeton on Friday; if they win, they will face the winning team of the Georgia Tech-USD match come Saturday.

Playing one of the most exciting matches of the day, Alsola helped the Bears to edge a 6-1 win over Santa Barbara in their dual match home opener.

Starting out the season in a solid No. 12 spot in the country, the Bears are gearing up for their first two dual matches of the year.

Sophomore doubles duo Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm played especially well in the highly-anticipated ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego. At the ASU Thunderbird Championships in Tempe, Arizona, junior Hannah Viller Moeller was a standout player.

Seven women will be participating in two different tournaments spanning from Nov. 2 to Nov. 6, and two doubles pairs, sophomores Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm and senior Erin Richardson and sophomore Makenna Thiel, will be playing in the highly anticipated ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego. In Tempe, Arizona at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, Cal will send senior Valentina Ivanov and juniors Hannah Viller Moeller and Cami Brown to participate in doubles and singles matches.

After many wins in both doubles and singles, sophomores Alsola and Wiersholm ultimately brought home the ITA Regional doubles champions title.
