As is often the case with mainstream remakes, Amazon Studios’ watered-down execution was a painful-in-all-the-wrong-ways snoozefest.

Heartfelt and meticulous, “Don’t Make Me Go” goes strong for so long — it’s appalling how lost it ends up.

Although Slate and Day give outstanding performances, they are forced into a largely uninspired rom-com plot that doesn’t devote enough time to showing the two when they’re at their best — when they’re together.

Even though it’s not the most polished, the film affirms the value in giving creative stories the opportunity to come to the screen, heralding a brighter future for cinematic adaptations of musicals. 

In its entirety, the film is a subversion of everything its predecessors were and are — ultimately working to reshape the presence of the female character within the fairytale genre.

“One Night in Miami” is a spectacular debut for King and should put her, Powers and Ben-Adir on track for further triumph at the 93rd Academy Awards.

With Taylor-Joy’s gazing eyes and sharp wits pounding through the screen, the audience is transported to the front row of her countless intense chess matches. If you ever thought chess was boring, “The Queen’s Gambit” will surely convince you otherwise.

For these three creators, their unique perspectives and approach to filmmaking are a fascinating look into how the machine truly works.

But even if it never quite escapes the trappings of its genre, “The Vast of Night” is still in many regards a respectable triumph of microbudget filmmaking.

While the script is far from praiseworthy, the visual effects are virtually flawless, making the film feel like a visual spectacle.
