When a UC Berkeley student is sexually assaulted and reports the crime to police, the collection of biological evidence does not start at the campus health center, but in a hospital in the next city over.

With the audit’s approval, student activists have found an ally in state legislators, whom they are now hoping can be a vehicle for change on college campuses.

State officials will soon begin evaluating UC Berkeley’s policies regarding sexual assault, following complaints that the campus’ response to cases of sexual violence is inadequate.

After heated discussion at Wednesday night’s meeting, the ASUC senate passed a bill critiquing university policy in handling sexual assault cases.
