Each spring, many students embark on campaigns to tilt the future of UC Berkeley and its student body. They run for office in one of the largest student governments on a college campus: the ASUC.
This year, 39 candidates are vying for 20 seats in the ASUC Senate. There are four presidential candidates, three external affairs vice presidential candidates and two student advocate candidates. Candidates for two executive positions — executive vice president and academic affairs vice president — are running unopposed.
The two majors parties in the 2017 elections are Student Action and CalSERVE, following in a long tradition. The campus has also seen a spike in independent senatorial candidates: There are eight this year, as well as three candidates with the newly formed Pirate Party.
The 2017 ASUC elections run from April 10-12.
