ASUC Elections Council

The ASUC Elections Council convened Friday to determine the order of candidates on the ballot and the various propositions that will be voted on in the upcoming elections.

The ASUC Elections Council held its annual mandatory elections meeting Tuesday where candidates for ASUC elected positions and proponents of referendums were briefed on election policies.

Following the resignation of ASUC Senator Dhruv Krishnaswamy on Jan. 10, Will Liu was elected to fill his seat.

The 2020-21 ASUC senators kicked off the start of their terms Wednesday night with a presentation from UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ and the resignation of James Weichert from the ASUC Elections Council chair position at their first meeting.

The ASUC Elections Council and Judicial Council held virtual meetings Monday and Wednesday, respectively, to certify election results for the 2020-21 academic year.

Student Action allegedly committed multiple campaign violations in the 2018 and 2019 ASUC election cycles, which included allegedly failing to report expenditures such as T-shirts and stickers and spamming on Facebook. Party leadership denied the allegations, however.

The student body passed a student fee for increased transportation options and graduate students voted in support of the Graduate Assembly separating from the ASUC with two referendums.

Independent candidates will dominate the ASUC Senate in the next academic year, as announced during the tabulation ceremony Friday. 38 candidates ran for ASUC Senate, including 10 candidates from Student Action, which won a majority of seats last year. Four candidates ran for transfer student representative, a new office in the ASUC.

The ASUC Judicial Council unanimously overturned a decision by the ASUC Elections Council at its virtual meeting Saturday, granting party status to the Transfer Coalition in the 2020 election.

Throughout the ASUC election season, candidates have run their campaigns with personal contributions, donations or without any funding.
