ASUC Elections Council

UC Berkeley sophomore Dhruv Krishnaswamy announced his independent candidacy for ASUC Senate, and he is running with the aim of strengthening the campus community.

ASUC elections have moved completely online, forcing candidates to alter their campaigning strategies and the ASUC Elections Council to find new ways to get the word out about voting. The decision was made in response to campus’s move to remote classes and the shelter-in-place order over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ASUC Elections Council held its annual “Point of No Return” meeting Friday, during which it discussed election procedures and finalized the candidates and order of this year’s ballot.

The ASUC Elections Council held its annual mandatory elections meeting Tuesday, during which potential candidates for ASUC elected positions as well as proponents of referendums were briefed on the election cycle and election policies they must obey.

While calling for the elimination of the party system may seem drastic, at the very least, it will remove the rivalry that has distracted ASUC officials from their responsibilities for too long.

The rapidly-approaching end to the 2019 ASUC elections will bring with it an end to campaigning and the challenges that accompany it, including balancing work and navigating the bureaucracy of the ASUC.

In fall 2017, campus senior Jonathan Allen secured a seat in the ASUC Senate after the resignation of former senator Sunny Aggarwal. This spring, however, votes were recounted for a second time as a part of the ASUC Elections Council meeting Monday after Allen himself resigned.
