UC Berkeley institute releases report on climate refugees

UC Berkeley’s Othering & Belonging Institute, which focuses on research, policy and work related to marginalized communities, released a report Tuesday calling for a legal mechanism to protect refugees forced to cross borders by climate issues.

Twenty-two students presented detailed proposals for open-source, technological solutions to problems in transnational security Monday as part of a student-run course created in response to the July 2016 terrorist attacks in Bangladesh and Nice, which resulted in the deaths of two UC Berkeley students.

Campus community holds vigil in honor of student Tarishi Jain, other victims of the Bangladesh terror attack

The flags of America, Bangladesh and India stood tall on the steps of Sproul Plaza as a memorial vigil took place to commemorate campus sophomore and Indian citizen Tarishi Jain and other victims who lost their lives alongside her in the terror attacks that took place in Bangladesh on Friday.

UC Berkeley celebrates launch of Subir & Malini Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies

Although the center was established in 2013, due to logistical complexities, it officially opened Monday. Chancellor Nicholas Dirks presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Following the event, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC University – one of the universities the center will partner with – gave a guest lecture to celebrate the center’s launch.
