Berkeley Protests

UC Berkeley may not have a rivalry with USC, but we Bears just want to make sure it’s clear: USC pales in comparison to us.

Berkeley City Council decided at their Tuesday meeting to table three items that would respond to police action during December protests.

After the smoke from tear gas deployments cleared, many in our community were rightly outraged by police use of force during protests over the last five nights — particularly the first. The demonstrations, however, compel us to assess not only the actions of police but also the messages communicated by protesters, city officials and the media.

The reactions of the campus and Berkeley communities to the grand jury decisions not to indict police officers in the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner show that these decisions deeply affect the moral sensibility, sense of justice and political activism of many of us and deservedly so.

Berkeley High School students peacefully marched to the Campanile in protest of police brutality and in solidarity with Ferguson protesters Wednesday afternoon.

For the fourth consecutive night, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Berkeley on Tuesday, gathering outside Old City Hall to address mass arrests from the night before.
