So far, reporting has done nothing. However, I did connect with a network of other survivors. We’ve supported and informed each other when we recounted our stories.

“We actually have no idea what happened to them,” said one orientation leader. “They seem to have just vanished off the face of the earth.”

Last year marked New Student Services' move away from the previous format of Cal Student Orientation, which involved a series of weekend orientations, to Golden Bear Orientation. The transition from CalSO to GBO has been somewhat of a challenge, as many of these goals take time to perfect.

I was worried advising would never be personal enough, but I realize now, in such a large school, advising will be as personal as you make it.

About 500 orientation leaders — 500 short of what the university originally sought — chaperoned 9,500 incoming students, who arrived Aug. 15 for Golden Bear Orientation, or GBO.

A big C has emerged and it’s not the landmark on the Berkeley Hills overlooking campus — it’s a human C, made up of 7,194 incoming first-year and transfer students.

6,500 new first year and 3,000 new transfer students will participate in the new Golden Bear Orientation, or GBO, beginning Tuesday morning as a part of the Golden Bear Experience, a four-part program created for all incoming undergraduate students.

The last four years have provided unique challenges to the chancellorship, from routine budget and funding issues to the campus’s changing political climate.
