Amid the nationwide decline in jobs in the history education field, UC Berkeley’s department of history has managed to partly defy the trend. 

Some question if the two are truly discrete; is there room for overlap despite their apparently contrasting natures?

In order to increase diversity and inclusion within the data science field, the UC Berkeley Division of Data Sciences partnered with the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group of the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, or BIDS, to host an informational data research event in Doe Library on Tuesday.

The nine data science graduates are Jeevan Mokkala, Emanuel Lucban, Adam Osborn, Nikhil Krishnan, Thao Vo, Alexander Ivanoff, Liam Shi, Howe Cui and Ting Chih Lin. It appears, however, that many students will follow in their footsteps: This fall, when the major officially opened for students to declare, nearly 1,200 filed predeclarations.

UC Berkeley is on the verge of establishing a major in data science through the College of Letters and Science, pending approval by the Academic Senate.

Data 8X, the course’s online equivalent, is free to audit, but students must pay in order to take exams and receive a certificate. This certification, however, will likely not transfer as academic credit or satisfy the data science major requirement, according to Cathryn Carson, the faculty lead of the Data Science Education Program.

The campus has created an interim dean position to lead the development of the new Division of Data Science at UC Berkeley, as announced Dec. 19.

Former associate director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Edward Joseph Lofgren, who passed away Sept. 6 at the age of 102, is remembered for helping build the first high-energy particle accelerator and for his contribution to the Manhattan Project.

The new four-unit course, “Foundations of Data Science” — cross-listed as Statistics 94 and Computer Science 94 — combines introductory statistics and computational concepts with hands-on work involving hard data that brings “real-world relevance,” according to the program's website.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science announced Nov. 24 the election of four campus faculty members as fellows.
