Civic Center Park

The East Bay community celebrated its second annual Asian Cultural Festival at Civic Center Park in Downtown Berkeley on Sunday. Groups came from all over the Bay Area to participate in the festivities. 

The Berkeley Half Marathon will occur Sunday, Feb. 23, resulting in street closures, adjusted bus routes and parking restrictions. 

Following the deaths of two unhoused men Sunday at Civic Center Park, the Berkeley Police Department announced a plan Tuesday to increase police presence in the park. 

Many community members and public officials gave speeches against the detention centers, including state Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, and Berkeley Poet Laureate Rafael González. The event was led by the office of City Councilmember Rashi Kesarwani.

Berkeley police arrested a man on suspicion of selling marijuana to a Berkeley High School student Wednesday afternoon, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

Berkeley Police Department arrested a suspect after receiving reports of a man a with stab wound sitting in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park, according to a Nixle alert released Thursday.

Latinx Heritage Month, which lasts from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, is being celebrated in the Berkeley community through music, food and open discussions.

The question of citizen privacy and the use of police recordings were central topics at the first Police Review Commission meeting of the year Wednesday. Commissioners discussed issues of privacy and policy regarding body-worn cameras in the police force as well as the department’s reaction to a protest Aug. 5.

The “No to Marxism in America 2” rally held at Civic Center Park was full of chanted slogans and loud arguments with counterprotesters, and there was more violence outside the police-monitored park.

A memorial plaque honoring the victims who died in a balcony collapse in 2015 was unveiled Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park.
