More than 100 UC Berkeley clerical, administrative and support staff employees staged a one-day walkout and formed picket lines Tuesday to protest the University of California’s contract negotiation practices and to stand in solidarity with UCLA skilled trades workers, who were also striking.

An independent custodial contractor of UC Berkeley is currently under investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor on allegations of underpaying workers and refusing to pay overtime hours for its employees.

Union representatives called on the UC Board of Regents to support a bill that would ensure workers employed by private university contractors are compensated comparably to university employees doing similar work.
