Students and city residents are criticizing Berkeley police officers for allegedly engaging in racial profiling during traffic stops, basing their findings on a seven-month period of data that showed black and Latino people were detained at a disproportionately high rate.

California gas prices continue to reach significant lows this month, generating savings at the pump for Berkeley motorists, according to an American Automobile Association report released Monday.

The NAACP has always operated using the principles of emotional intelligence and civility; accordingly, I will continue to encourage all people, police and citizen alike, to think about what’s in their and the communities’ best interest before they act. Citizens must always question unjust acts and challenge bigotry; however, I will encourage people of color to respond in a measured and tactical manner that reduces the possibility of them being harmed which will further erode the already fractious relationship that far too many citizens of color have with the Berkeley Police Department (BPD).

Marked by impassioned debate, Berkeley City Council ultimately decided Tuesday night to unanimously adopt a policy aimed at curbing possible police bias and discrimination.

In their first regularly scheduled meeting of the month the Berkeley Police Review Commission continued their discussion on the Feb. 12 death of Kayla Moore.

Two pepper-spray incidents from this past summer were reviewed at the Berkeley Police Review Commission meeting Wednesday, as part of city policy.
