Community members gathered at People’s Park on Sunday to honor the trees that were cut down during the first day of UC Berkeley’s student housing construction operation on the park on Aug. 3.

Campus spokesperson Dan Mogulof discussed the recent People’s Park developments with People's Park Historic District Advocacy Group President Harvey Smith and Berkeleyside housing and homelessness reporter Supriya Yelimeli in a KQED forum Wednesday morning.

Nearly two weeks after an appeals court once again temporarily blocked UC Berkeley’s construction at People’s Park, the familiar sight of tents has appeared amid the felled trees.

The new housing structures planned at People’s Park will add approximately 1,100 beds of on-campus, below-market housing to the UC Berkeley campus.

At 5 p.m. Wednesday, students, park residents and People’s Park advocates gathered on Sproul Plaza to send a message: end development on People’s Park.

Although Berkeley’s Sacred Rest Drop-In Center for houseless people is temporarily closed to accommodate a summer camp, Village of Love executive director and founder Joey Harrison has found other ways to serve the city’s unhoused community. 

A UC Berkeley visiting student from the United Kingdom was found dead in his room at the Women's Faculty Club by staff July 1, according to campus spokesperson Dan Mogulof.
