More than three months into his redshirt sophomore season, he was beginning from scratch as a receiver/tailback just weeks after starting under center.

With a new year on the (somewhat distant) horizon, here’s part one of a handful of Hail Mary predictions for the 2019 season.

The tools the team will have in the uphill climb to improve on last year’s 7-6 record have become clearer, but knowing whether or not they have what it takes is still a while away.

For one, Cal is again without a clear-cut first-string QB, and although a starter is unlikely to be officially announced until shortly before the regular season begins in late August, this will be the biggest test the competitors have faced so far.

As announced this week, quarterback Ross Bowers — the team’s 2017 starter who famously front-flipped his way to a 37-3 upset of then No. 8 Washington State — is one of seven student-athletes leaving the Bears for a change in scenery.

A little more than a year has passed, and a lot has changed — this afternoon, the former Bruin announced his commitment to join the Cal football program beginning this spring.
