Berkeley school district says goodbye to superintendents, reviews math curriculum

The Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, board meeting Wednesday marked the final meeting of the year for the school board and the last meeting for Superintendent Donald Evans and Associate Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi. Aside from these goodbyes, the majority of the meeting was spent in discussion of the district’s math program.

Wednesday night’s emotional Berkeley Unified School District meeting marked the end of many things — the end of student director Arvin Hariri’s yearlong term, recognition of the retirement of four BUSD employees and community members, and the revocation of REALM’s charter.

More than 750 people from the Berkeley Federation of Teachers, or BFT, and Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, joined other California educators in Sacramento on Wednesday to lobby for charter accountability measures and to show support for greater funding for education.

Berkeley school district board introduces new superintendent, hosts musical talent

The Berkeley Unified School District’s regular semimonthly meeting Wednesday was marked by the introduction of the new superintendent, a musical performance by Young Gifted and Black, a lengthy discussion of the future of REALM Charter School and a visit from board President Judy Appel, who is currently on medical leave.

Berkeley Unified School District Superintendent Donald Evans announced in a letter Thursday that he plans to retire, effective July 31. District school board members accepted his resignation letter at a meeting Thursday.
