15 inmates at Santa Rita Jail test positive for COVID-19

As of Sunday, Santa Rita Jail has 15 inmates who have tested positive for the coronavirus. Concerns about conditions inside the jail have led attorneys and leaders from faith-based community organizations to urge reductions in the jail’s population.

Federal court rules in favor of city of Berkeley in case regarding homeless encampment

A federal court ruled against three homeless men and in favor of the city of Berkeley last week, deciding that constitutional rights were not violated in the removals of a homeless encampment and that the procedural seizure of people’s possessions was valid.

US district judge sides with city of Berkeley against claims of police brutality

U.S. District Judge William Alsup sided with the City of Berkeley on April 16 against claims that three women arrested during Berkeley Police Department’s removal of a homeless encampment in 2016 were victims of police brutality or police retaliation.

First They Came for the Homeless threatens lawsuit, alleges city violated constitutional rights

A lawyer representing the advocacy group First They Came for the Homeless sent an open letter to the Berkeley City Council Ad-Hoc Committee on Homeless Solutions on Friday, alleging that the city has consistently violated unhoused residents’ legal protections and constitutional rights during homeless encampment disbandments.
