California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Oct. 6 that gives students, particularly transgender students, at state public universities the ability to have their lived names printed on their diplomas.

The November election pits Newsom, who has been in California politics for more than a decade, against Cox, a political newcomer.

A bill introduced to the California State Assembly in January marks the latest endeavor in California to convert all single-use public restrooms into all-gender restrooms — an effort that echoes those already made by the University of California and the city of Berkeley.
