If TV shows were foods, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” would be pink lemonade at a sunny picnic — sweet, delightful and refreshing with just the right amount of tart.

What’s the best space opera about an intergalactic war fought by weird alien species? (It’s not “Star Wars.”) What’s the most emotionally investing fantasy series since “The Lord of the Rings”? (It’s not “Game of Thrones.”) And what’s one of the best comic books of the last decade? (It’s not a superhero comic.)

Every semester in The Daily Californian’s arts & entertainment department, we welcome a new batch of beat reporters. While they will spend the semester reporting on a multitude of different projects and exhibits specific to their expertise, they rarely have the opportunity to focus on their topics on a small scale.

In the case of awards shows, these qualities may actually be the very best thing about the Emmys. When stacked side by side with the Oscars, which generate more emotional frustration than is fundamentally necessary, it’s easy to see the Emmys’ clear strengths.

Instead of now-notorious critical favorite “Game of Thrones,” the favored contenders were the topical dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale” and contemplative sci-fi show “Westworld.”

We are presently in a golden age of television. It would be nearly impossible for one person to sort through all of the television at our fingertips and decide what is or isn’t the best. This is where the Emmy Awards come in.
