California Gov. Gavin Newsom passes bill prioritizing protection of sex workers

On Tuesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 233, a bill that prohibits prostitution-related arrests of people who witness or are victims of certain violent crimes and that prevents condoms from being used as evidence of sex work.

Following Berkeley’s lead, SF takes step to decriminalize marijuana offenses

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office will begin weeding out past marijuana-related misdemeanors and felonies, giving convicted individuals a chance to walk free or receive lesser sentences.

Study shows racial disparities in San Francisco criminal justice system have decreased since 2014

While still markedly present, racial disparities in San Francisco’s criminal justice system have narrowed significantly since the 2014 implementation of Proposition 47, according to an independent review published by the San Francisco District Attorney’s office Thursday.

Lawmakers seek to curb smartphone theft with device ‘kill switch’

Bay Area lawmakers introduced legislation last Thursday proposing that new smart phones and tablets sold in California come equipped with a digital “kill-switch” function, allowing owners to disable devices when lost or stolen.
