The family of former Berkeley Mayor Eugene “Gus” Newport has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Owl Inc. Transportation.

Berkeley City Council honored the lives of city trailblazers and justice advocates Dorothy Walker and Gus Newport during its meeting Tuesday. Council members later discussed the Southside Complete Streets Project to create more pedestrian-friendly streets and restoration efforts for the previously painted-over “Reparations Now!” mural. 

Newport was originally from Rochester, New York, where he gained interest in political activism in the 1950s and 1960s, according to a newsletter from Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín. After working for the labor department, he moved to Berkeley in 1974 and acted as the city’s mayor from 1979 to 1986.

Incumbent Rashi Kesarwani has been declared victorious for Berkeley City Council District 1 with 50.03% of the votes as of 1:19 a.m. Saturday with 100% of the precincts accounted for.

Mark Humbert is in the lead for Berkeley City Council District 8 with 64.05% of the votes as of 5 p.m. Wednesday with 100% of the precincts accounted for.
