UC system responds to Trump’s executive order tying free speech to funding

The UC Office of the President, or UCOP, responded to the executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Thursday that ties federal funding and grants for public universities to their promotion of “free inquiry,” calling the order “unnecessary” and reaffirming the UC system’s accordance with free speech laws.

During his speech at the 2019 Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday, President Donald Trump condemned the assault that took place Feb. 19 on Sproul Plaza against Hayden Williams, a man tabling for the conservative organization Turning Point USA.

Conservatives nationwide directed criticism toward the UC Berkeley campus and UCPD after a man was assaulted Feb. 19 on Sproul Plaza while tabling for the conservative organization Turning Point USA — now, the campus is speaking up for the first time regarding its response to the incident.

UCPD responded to a report Tuesday afternoon that a male tabling for a conservative organization on Upper Sproul Plaza had been assaulted, according to a Nixle alert released by UCPD on Wednesday afternoon.
