Nine UC Berkeley faculty members were awarded Sloan Research Fellowships, which recognize promising young researchers in the physical and biological sciences, mathematics, computer science and economics.

After completion of repairs and upgrades, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, is rebooting its Geneva-based Large Hadron Collider, allowing physicists both across the globe and on UC Berkeley’s campus to once again be able to make use of the data it provides on established and undiscovered particles.

On July 4, two experiments analyzing data from the Large Hadron Collider at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) at the border of Switzerland and France announced that they had discovered a new particle, which looks similar to the long-sought Higgs boson.

UC Berkeley physicists held the panel discussion, “The Higgs Boson Explained: What is the Higgs and Why is Everyone So Excited About it?,” to explain the Higgs boson, a newfound elementary particle that had been theorized over for more than 50 years.

UC Berkeley physicists involved in the search for the Higgs boson will hold a free public lecture and panel discussion Friday at noon.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research announced they have evidence to support the existence of the Higgs boson — a discovery made possible with contributions from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
