The Berkeley Student Food Collective, or BSFC, launched a petition to appeal the ASUC Student Union Board’s rejection of their proposal to move into the vacant Bear’s Lair Bar in Eshleman Hall.

BSFC is currently operating in a small space off campus, according to BSFC Executive Director Jeff Noven. A grocery store on campus would help students access affordable food and grocery options, including EBT food retail, Noven said in an email. 

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UC Berkeley Food Pantry and the Berkeley Student Food Collective, or BSFC, have adjusted their health and safety standards to provide food and other resources to campus and the Berkeley community.

Standing three or more in a row, one of the most familiar sights across the UC Berkeley campus is, in fact, its trash cans. Many of the waste bins, marked according to specified material, sport the phrase “Zero Waste by 2020,” calling on students, faculty and visitors alike to do their part in the campuswide project to promote sustainability.

Representatives of the Hunger Free Campus Program asked for an increase in funding from the California Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, aiming to expand programs that currently allow students with food insecurity to have access to food on campus.

For the groups paving the path to a more sustainable food future in Berkeley, food sustainability is about more than just being ecologically friendly — food sustainability means ensuring food access and affordability, and the reform of food distribution structures.

Starting May 1, Alameda County will require retail stores to charge 10 cents per shopping bag and only distribute recycled-content paper or reusable plastic bags, according to a press release issued Monday by the Alameda County Waste Management Authority.

Jeff Noven, a 21-year-old UC Berkeley student detained at a protest last week, will no longer face charges. Noven was arrested at the San Francisco UC Board of Regents meeting Wednesday on suspicion of vandalism and inciting a riot.

In the fifth day of an occupation that began Wednesday evening to protest tuition increases, occupiers started to bump up against shrinking numbers and the looming presence of Thanksgiving break, posing new problems and new opportunities for a largely leaderless movement.
