Berkeley College Republicans and Cal Berkeley Democrats gathered in the Valley Life Sciences Building on Thursday evening for this year’s Great Debate, in which the two rival clubs presented their views on labor, foreign policy and higher education.

Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 707 into law Saturday, a bill that bans people from carrying concealed firearms or ammunition on school grounds or college campuses throughout the state of California.

Of the seven measures featured on the Berkeley city ballot, two have garnered the particular attention of student political groups for their potential to affect student life at UC Berkeley. Students have directed their attention primarily to issues regarding redistricting and taxation for this year’s election.

Representatives of the Cal Berkeley Democrats and Berkeley College Republicans presented their views on midterm election issues during the “Great Debate” Thursday evening, an annual event co-hosted by the two campus political clubs.

“Berkeley United to End Global Poverty” brought together Berkeley College Republicans, Cal Berkeley Democrats, the Jewish Student Union, the Muslim Student Association and Cal Veterans Group, to engage in a discussion about international debt relief.
