The city of Berkeley and its community members have denounced campus’s 2021 Long Range Development Plan, or LRDP, and its environmental report for its lack of consideration of impacts on the city.

For Paul Wallace, 1921 Walnut St. has served as his home for the past six years and is the only thing keeping him from experiencing homelessness during the pandemic, a reality that makes UC Berkeley’s notices of eviction particularly “infuriating."

UC Berkeley students have been occupying People’s Park since Monday in hopes of pressuring the campus to stop its plans to build housing on the park.

UC Berkeley students and community members alike gathered in People’s Park on Friday to protest campus plans to build housing in the area, culminating in crowds of people tearing down fences and placing them on the steps of Sproul Hall.

In preparation for plans to build student and supportive housing, UC Berkeley Capital Strategies, which oversees campus development, temporarily closed sections of People’s Park on Tuesday for soil and safety testing.

About 25 individuals gathered, held signs and spoke outside 1921 Walnut St. on Monday as part of a protest in opposition to UC Berkeley's plan to buy the rent-controlled apartment building.

UC Berkeley is seeking community input to update its Long Range Development Plan and Campus Master Plan by hosting a virtual open house from May 28 through August 31.

The UC Board of Regents will vote Tuesday on whether to take funding from four UC Berkeley projects and allocate it toward the replacement of Evans Hall, after voters rejected Proposition 13 in March and stopped the UC system from receiving additional funding.

UC Berkeley is in the process of buying a property on Walnut Street as part of its plan to create more housing for students, as first reported by Berkeleyside.
