If “Pam & Tommy” is a story entranced by characters reaching for a higher status, it also takes interest in one character who knows she has more wit than the twits surrounding her.

This newest reproduction of “Rebecca,” directed by Ben Wheatley, is a gilded tchotchke: beautiful aesthetics elevating mediocre substance.

As a romance, it’s putrid. As a morality play, it’s indecipherable. Even as a best-of collection, it’s unimaginatively curated.

Though the protagonists of Cassius (Lakeith Stanfield) and girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson) are both played by Black actors, they at times employ the “white voice” of dubbed-over, white, occasionally British actors.

It seems passé at this point to make an ABBA pun regarding “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” But then again, how could one resist?

You can fondly reminisce about your time spent at UC Berkeley while bopping along to these tunes. We at the Clog sure will be!

It’s not a particularly revolutionary performance by Oldman, but there are enough interesting moments deserving of a better narrative framework.
