The Bears look to build on last weekend’s victory against the SJSU Spartans in their four games at the UCSB-hosted Gaucho Invite

The Cal women’s varsity eight boat capped off a record-breaking season, despite its underwhelming sixth-place finish at the NCAA National Championship earlier this month.

Its semifinal, overtime, 10-8 loss to No. 1 USC on Saturday put a damper on the sheer force that was on display from the Bears throughout the tournament.

Nevertheless, Cal showed impressive resilience the following match against UCLA. The Bear defense turned it on and allowed only three goals against their talented interstate rival.

The Bears will face a murderers’ row on the road to a third MPSF championship, which they first won in 1999 and most recently in 2011. Cal’s first loss of this season was at the hands of Stanford, but revenge was taken later in a triple-overtime thriller weeks later.

It looked like the Bears of old were threatening to make an appearance. But as the second half began, Cal showed why it was a No. 1 unit.

The scrappy Bears had to claw their way from behind the whole match; they did not once lead the Cardinal until the final, game-winning goal.

The last time Cal pitched this strong of a defensive effort against such a team was 2006.
