Berkeley’s iconic People’s Park could include supportive housing for its homeless residents in the future, as part of UC Berkeley’s larger effort to redevelop the site.

Berkeley City Council will convene Tuesday at its regular meeting to consider a number of proposals, including funding for a mental health peer education program, a community screening of a "Hate Man" documentary and a recommendation for the city to officially co-sponsor the San Francisco LGBT Pride parade.

Mark Hawthorne, or “Hate Man,” a locally famous Berkeley figure who lived in People’s Park and formerly wrote for the New York Times, died Sunday. He was 80 years old.

Homelessness is far from unfamiliar to a Londoner, but there was no denying that seeing the dominating presence of street people on Shattuck Avenue, in a town that is “on vacation,” is enough to make anyone susceptible to consciously recognizing its signs.

A well-known member of Berkeley’s homeless community was ordered by campus police Sunday night to stay away from People’s Park for one week.
