People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked Chancellor Carol Christ for permission to place a banner underneath the Campanile reading “It’s High Time We Went Vegan. PETA.” In an email, campus spokesperson Janet Gilmore said that campus has not yet responded.

DxE is known for its protests against industries that sell or produce animal-based products. This specific protest was an “open rescue” at a free-range farm.

Whole Foods on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley successfully placed a restraining order on the animal rights activist group Direct Action Everywhere, or DxE, in response to the group’s demonstrations on Whole Foods’ property.
