Olympics wrapup: Day eight

Nathan Adrian wrapped up his Olympics with his second gold medal — and third overall — of the London Games, anchoring the American team with a time of 46.85 in the freestyle leg of the men’s 400 medley relay. Dana Vollmer and two other Cal swimmers won gold medals for their performances in the women’s 400 medley relay.

Erin Cafaro and the U.S. women’s eight team captured gold for the sixth straight year. The United States held off Canada by two thirds of a length at the finish. Julie Nichols and partner Kristin Hedstrom came in fourth in the semifinals of the women’s lightweight double sculls with a time of 7:12.61.

Olympics wrapup: Day two

Dana Vollmer didn’t just win Cal’s first gold medal of the Olympics, she did so in a special kind of fashion. Vollmer’s outer cap fell off in the first half of the 100 fly, and her time at the halfway point of the race was only the third-fastest. But a less-streamlined Vollmer swam the race of her life, setting a world record en route to her gold medal finish, becoming the first female swimmer to crack the 56-second barrier in the event.
